What the exam covers

The exam is split into four outline sections. Our full practice exam takes as many questions from each one as the real exam does.

How to use this practice

Start with short sets to learn the material. Every question has an explanation and a link to the rule or official page it comes from. When you are scoring well, take the full 75-question exam with the 105-minute timer. Your results break down by section so you can see where to study next.

The real exam also has 5 unscored questions mixed in. Our full set leaves those out, and our raw percentage is not the same as FINRA's scaled score.

Independent study material. Pass the License is not affiliated with FINRA.

SIE FAQs

Who can take the SIE?

Anyone aged 18 or older, including students. You do not need a firm to sponsor you or to be associated with a FINRA member firm to sit for the SIE.Source: FINRA SIE exam page

Does passing the SIE let me work in securities?

No. The SIE alone does not qualify you for registration. You also need to pass a qualification exam for the business you want to do, such as the Series 6 or Series 7, and you must be associated with a member firm to take that exam.Source: FINRA SIE exam page

How long is the exam and what score passes?

You get 1 hour 45 minutes. FINRA counts 75 scored questions plus 5 unscored pretest items you cannot pick out (80 in all), and a passing score of 70. The fee is $100. Our full practice exam uses 75 questions and leaves the unscored items out.Source: FINRA SIE content outline

What does the SIE cover?

Four outline sections: knowledge of capital markets, understanding products and their risks, understanding trading, customer accounts and prohibited activities, and an overview of the regulatory framework. Our full practice exam draws 12, 33, 23 and 7 questions from them, matching the scored allocation in the outline.Source: FINRA SIE content outline

How long is a passing SIE result good for?

FINRA says SIE results are valid for four years. If you are not associated with a member firm and pass a qualification exam within that time, you can rely on the result.Source: FINRA SIE exam page

Is my practice score the same as a real score?

No. FINRA scales and equates real exam scores, so a raw percentage here is not the same thing. Use it to find weak sections, and aim to score comfortably above 70 percent on full practice exams before test day.

How long do I wait to retake if I fail?

Right now FINRA requires 30 days after a first or second failed attempt and 180 days after a third. For retakes on or after January 19, 2027, those drop to 15 days and 60 days.Source: FINRA SIE exam page
